During her childhood, Sherrill's grandfather would tell her stories of his experience as a bomber pilot during World War II.According to Sherrill, these stories inspired her to join the military. After receiving a bachelor's degree from the United States Naval Academy in 1994, she began serving in the U.S. Navy as a helicopter pilot. During her tenure, Sherrill flew missions in Europe and the Middle East. After ending her military service, Sherrill received a master's degree from the London School of Economics in 2003 and a law degree from Georgetown University in 2007.Sherrill then began working in private practice before joining the U.S. Attorney's Officein New Jersey. During her tenure at the office, Sherrill worked as an outreach and re-entry coordinator and as an Assistant U.S. Attorney. In2018, Sherrill was elected to represent New Jersey's 11th Congressional District, defeatingJay Webber (R) 57% to 42% in the general election. Before her election, Republicans had represented the district since 1985.Sherrill's congressional campaign focused on economic issues, saying, "this race doesn't feel as partisan as it feels like we have to stand up and fight hard for the economic future of middle-class families in New Jersey." Sherrill won re-election 53.3% to 46.7% in2020, 59% to 40.2% in2022, and 56.5% to 41.8% in2024. She resigned from Congress on November. 20, 2025, after sge was electedgovernor.
