On August 30, 2019, Shimkus announced that he wouldnot seek re-electionin 2020. Shimkus has been an elected public official since 1989, having previously served as a trustee of Collinsville Townshipand the treasurer of Madison County, Illinois. Shimkus graduated from the U.S. Military Academy and received an M.B.A from SouthernIllinoisUniversity Edwardsville after serving his Army commitment. He worked as a high school teacher. At the beginning of the115th Congress, Shimkus was assigned to the Committee on Energy and Commerce. As of a 2014 analysis ofmultiple outside rankings, Shimkus is a more moderate right of center Republican Party vote.
