It was as simple as that.\r\n\r\nWe need a 2027 expansion that aims to eliminate child poverty in America, the richest country in the history of the planet. What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? A strong labor movement and thriving unions lift ALL workers. Higher levels of union membership are strongly correlated to less income inequality, higher family incomes, better health and retirement benefits, and greater life satisfaction... for ALL families, union or otherwise. As a former, and proud, union member, I know first-hand the significant benefits that union membership bestows. I have also seen first-hand how a strong union presence in an industry forces non-union employers to treat their employees better. We need to enshrine in federal law the right of every American worker, whether in the private or public sector, to collectively bargain; discourage anti-union activities by corporations; and support the labor movement. Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why? I admire FDR. Despite his wealth and privileged upbringing, he fought for and achieved a great deal for everyday working Americans. What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official? Integrity, honesty, commitment to public service, keeping an open mind, being a good listener. What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office? To serve my constituents, to communicate honestly and often to my constituents, to keep the promises I make to my constituents. What legacy would you like to leave? I would like to be remembered as someone who was a dedicated father, grandfather, friend and co-worker. Someone who was honest, hard-working, generous and loving. What was your very first job? How long did you have it? I started helping my father, who among other things was a CPA, do simple bookkeeping tasks when I was 12-years-old. I made $0.25/hour. I did that for 2 years. What is something that has been a struggle in your life? I'm naturally introverted, so approaching strangers and engaging them in conversation is something I always have to push myself to do. What qualities does the U.S. House of Representatives possess that makes it unique as an institution? It brings together representatives from every corner of the country to (hopefully) address the big challenges facing America and Americans. What do you perceive to be the United States' greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade? Reducing the influence of big money in politics. This will make Congress and the President more responsive to the interests and needs of average Americans, help us address income inequality, and allow us to implement bold progressive policies to help every American achieve their dream. Do you believe that compromise is necessary or desirable for policymaking? Compromise is absolutely necessary in policymaking. What was the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? The assassination of JFK.\nNote: Ballotpedia reserves the right to edit Candidate Connection survey responses.
