Melanie A. Stansbury (Democrat Party) is the incumbent U.S. Representative for New Mexico's 1st congressional district.

Debra Haaland (Democratic Party) is running for election for Governor of New Mexico. She is on the ballot in the Democratic primary on June 2, 2026. Haaland was the U.S. Secretary of the Interior. She assumed office on March 16, 2021. She left office on January 20, 2025. Haaland was the first Native American to serve as a cabinet secretary and was one of the first two Native American women elected to Congress. Haaland is an enrolled member of the Pueblo of Laguna. Haaland volunteered at her child's preschool and ran a small salsa business called Pueblo Salsa. She enrolled at the University of New Mexico (UNM) at age 28 and earned a bachelor's degree in English. She later earned a law degree from UNM Law School. Haaland was first elected to represent New Mexico's 1st Congressional Districtin2018, defeatingJanice Arnold-Jones (R) 59.1%-36.3%. She said, "As the representative for the families in the state’s first congressional district, I will be an advocate for renewable energy jobs to protect our land, air and water, a fighter to expand opportunities for our kids, and a champion for equity.” Before her election to Congress, she was the tribal administrator in San Felipe Pueblo, served as the chairwoman of the Laguna Development Corporation Board of Directors, and then chaired the Democratic Party of New Mexico. Haaland ran unsuccessfully for New Mexico lieutenant governor in2014, when she and Democratic gubernatorial candidateGary King (D) lost to the incumbent Republican ticket of Susana Martinez (R) andJohn Sanchez (R) 57.2%-42.8%. PresidentJoe Biden (D) nominated Haaland as interior secretary on December 17, 2020, one month after shewon re-election to a second term in the U.S. House. Haaland said, "If an Indigenous woman from humble beginnings can be confirmed as secretary of the Interior, our country holds promise for everyone."TheSenateconfirmed Haaland by a51-40 voteMarch 15, 2021. The interior secretary leads the U.S. Department of the Interior, which says it "protects and manages the Nation’s natural resources and cultural heritage; provides scientific and other information about those resources; and honors its trust responsibilities or special commitments to American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, and affiliated Island Communities." As secretary, Haaland created a new unit of the Bureau of Indian Affairs dedicated to investigating missing and murdered Native Americans. She also launched the Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative, which culminated in a report that revealed at least 973 American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian children had died at federally funded Native American boarding schools between 1871 and 1969 and advocated for "investing in remedies to the present-day impacts."
