Scalise was elected to a second term as House Majority Leaderfor the119th Congressin November 2024.He previously served as the House minority whip in the116th Congressand the House majority whip from 2014 to 2019. On October 4, 2023, Scalise announced he was running to replaceKevin McCarthy (R) asspeakerof the U.S. House in the118th Congress. Scalise won the Republican nomination to bespeakeron October 11, 2023.On October 12, Scalise withdrew from the House speaker election. On August 29, 2023, Scalise announced he had been diagnosed with blood cancer. He referred to the cancer as "very treatable" and said that he had already begun the treatment. Scalise said he did not intend to resign, nor did he think his diagnosis would interfere with his work as House Majority Leader. Following treatment, his cancer is in remission as of February 2024.
