I know he will do the same in his new role." Waltz received a bachelor's degree from the Virginia Military Institute in 1996. After graduating, he joined the U.S. Army in 1996.Beginning in 2000, he served two years as an active duty Special Forces officer in the Middle East and Afghanistan. Waltz served in the U.S. Army and National Guard for 27 years, retiring as a colonel.
