As an infant I survived spinal meningitis after doctors said I might not live or could suffer permanent brain damage. As a student I overcame bullying and constant school changes, even enrolling in independent college courses to earn enough credits to graduate on time. As an adult I faced personal struggles, including postpartum depression and domestic abuse, and I rebuilt my life through music and advocacy. I became a pioneering Southern female musical artistivist and later a human rights advocate challenging voter disenfranchisement laws that affect hundreds of thousands of Americans. I am an overcomer, and I am running to represent people who feel forgotten.

I believe in equal justice under the law. Our Constitution promises fairness, yet millions of Americans live under a system where justice depends on power and privilege. Today our nation faces a contradiction: a president can be convicted of a felony and still seek the highest office, while citizens in states like mine can lose their right to vote because of past convictions and can't find housing or employment. I live that reality. I cannot cast a ballot, yet people can still vote for me. That truth shows democracy belongs to the people—not gatekeepers. My campaign challenges systems that silence voices and proves that redemption, accountability, and equal treatment must apply to everyone. By imposing limits on the number of terms an elected official can serve, we ensure that leadership remains dynamic and responsive to evolving public needs. Term limits help prevent the accumulation of unchecked power and the development of political dynasties, promoting a healthy turnover of ideas and perspectives within legislative bodies. Moreover, they encourage regular opportunities for new voices and fresh approaches to governance, enhancing democratic representation and reducing the influence of special interests over time.

\r\nBeyond these benefits, term limits can also promote greater diversity in political leadership, encouraging individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences to enter public service without facing entrenched incumbency advantages. This diversity strengthens democracy by ensuring that elected officials more accurately reflect the demographics and values of the communities they serve. Staggered Terms: Senators serve staggered six-year terms, with one-third of the Senate facing election every two years. This structure provides continuity and stability while allowing for regular opportunities for electoral accountability.

\r\n3. Confirmation Powers: The Senate plays a critical role in the confirmation of federal judges, Cabinet officials, and other key appointments made by the President, adding a layer of checks and balances to the executive branch.

\r\n4. Debate and Filibuster: The Senate traditionally allows for extended debate and filibustering, which can prolong decision-making but also allows for thorough examination of legislation and encourages bipartisan cooperation.

\r\n5. Advice and Consent: Alongside confirmation powers, the Senate has the authority to provide \"advice and consent\" on treaties negotiated by the President, enhancing its role in shaping U.S. foreign policy.

\r\n6. I am a mother, musician, human rights advocate, truth teller, and fighter for justice. Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office? I have faced adversity my entire life and refused to be defined by it. Every vote should count. I believe in equal opportunities under the law. Our Constitution promises fairness, yet millions live under a system where justice depends on political affiliation. That's insanity to choose from the lesser of 2 evils. That contradiction shows democracy does not belongs to the people, but to political gatekeepers. My campaign is about hope, equal opportunity, and holding elected officials accountable when they break their promises. For too long, leaders claim to seek peace while dragging us into conflicts abroad. It’s time to stop choosing sides between parties and start choosing leadership serves all Americans. Even George Washington warned against partisan politics he was an independent too! Its time we send them all home. What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? I am deeply committed to bold criminal justice reform that balances accountability with true redemption and second chances. I believe in transformative economic development that creates real opportunity in every community, modern and reliable transportation that connects people to jobs, and strong support for agriculture that protects our farmers and food security. I am passionate about strengthening education and expanding access to quality healthcare so families and communities can thrive. Above all, I fight for genuine equal opportunity—so every person, regardless of background or past, has the dignity, access, and freedom to fully participate in our economy, our communities, and our democracy. By promoting accountability at all levels, we can restore faith in our institutions and ensure that our resources are directed towards initiatives that genuinely benefit our communities.\r\n\r\n 2. Prioritizing Resources for Americans\r\nWe must focus on spending our resources wisely, prioritizing the needs of American citizens. This means investing in What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? In the ongoing fight against poverty, bolstering agriculture and education stands as paramount. Agricultural development not only provides livelihoods for millions but also ensures food security and economic stability in vulnerable regions. By investing in sustainable farming practices, infrastructure, and market access, we can empower farmers and communities to break the cycle of poverty. Simultaneously, enhancing educational opportunities, particularly for marginalized groups, fosters long-term economic growth and social equity. Access to quality education equips individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in modern economies, promoting upward mobility and reducing inequity. Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why? I look up to Nelson Mandela for his extraordinary resilience and commitment to justice. Despite enduring 27 years of imprisonment under the apartheid regime in South Africa, Mandela emerged with a steadfast dedication to reconciliation and peaceful resolution. His ability to transcend bitterness and lead his country as its first black president exemplifies courage, forgiveness, and a vision for a unified nation. Mandela's capacity to overcome adversity and unite a divided society with compassion and inclusivity serves as a timeless example of leadership and moral integrity. I also admire Muhammad Ali for his unparalleled athleticism and unwavering advocacy for civil rights and social justice. Beyond his accomplishments in the boxing ring, Ali fearlessly spoke out against racial inequality, religious freedom, and opposition to the Vietnam War, even at great personal cost. His courage, resilience, and unyielding commitment to his principles continue to inspire generations, demonstrating the power of individual conviction in sparking meaningful societal change. Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy? \"Politics of Oppression\" House Ni**er by Dr. Issac Richmond and the New Jim Crow or the new Jim crow by Michelle Alexander What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official? Integrity, trust, fairness, and transparency are critical characteristics for an elected official, especially in representing constituents effectively. Integrity ensures that they adhere to ethical principles and moral standards, guiding their decisions and actions. This consistency builds a reputation for reliability and principled leadership. T rust is fundamental because it establishes a bond between the official and the public. When constituents trust their elected representatives, they believe in their ability to act in the community's best interests, fostering cooperation and support. Fairness and compassion are essential for ensuring equal treatment and justice. It requires officials to make decisions impartially, considering diverse perspectives and striving to address the needs of all constituents fairly. This principle promotes inclusivity and social cohesion within the community. Transparency complements fairness by providing visibility into the decision-making process. Open communication about policies, actions, and the rationale behind decisions fosters accountability. When officials are transparent, constituents can hold them accountable for their actions, promoting a culture of trust and responsiveness in governance. These principles lies in their collective ability to ensure proper representation. When elected officials embody integrity, trust, fairness, and transparency, they demonstrate a commitment to serving the public good. This not only strengthens democratic institutions but also enhances the legitimacy of elected representatives in the eyes of the community. Without trust in their leaders, constituents may feel disconnected from the political process, leading to disenchantment and a lack of effective representation. Therefore, upholding these principles is crucial for fostering a robust and inclusive democracy where every voice is heard and valued. What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder? The qualities I possess—humanity, compassion, and love—are what I believe are crucial for effective and impactful leadership in public office. In a political landscape often marked by division and partisanship, these qualities serve as foundational principles that prioritize the well-being and dignity of all individuals. Humanity allows me to empathize with the diverse experiences and needs of my constituents, ensuring their voices are heard and their concerns addressed with sincerity. Compassion drives me to seek equitable solutions that uplift marginalized communities and promote social justice. Love motivates me to approach governance with a genuine desire to serve and improve the lives of others, fostering unity and collaboration for the greater good. These qualities guide my commitment to integrity, fairness, and inclusive representation, essential for fostering trust and making meaningful progress as an officeholder. What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office? As an elected official, I am deeply committed to serving all constituents with unwavering dedication. It is my solemn duty to listen intently to the needs of every member of our community, especially those who have been marginalized or face unique challenges due to disability. I believe in crafting legislation that not only protects but empowers every individual, ensuring their rights are upheld and their voices are heard. Every policy I propose is rooted in the principle of fairness and equity, aiming to create a society where everyone can thrive and contribute without barriers. Together, we can build a future where inclusivity and compassion guide every decision, ensuring no one is left behind. What legacy would you like to leave? I aspire to leave a legacy of empowerment and hope, particularly for justice-impacted, marginalized, and disabled individuals. I want to inspire others to believe in their ability to overcome adversity and achieve their aspirations, regardless of challenges they may face. By advocating for equitable opportunities, promoting inclusivity, and championing policies that enhance accessibility and support, I aim to foster a society where everyone feels valued, heard, and empowered to pursue their dreams. My legacy would be measured by the positive impact on people's lives, ensuring that future generations inherit a world where belief in oneself is the cornerstone of resilience and success. What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time? The first historical event in my lifetime that I vividly remember was when my mother, a black single parent, was elected to the first city council in Jackson, TN. I was 12 years old at the time and had the honor of holding the Bible at her inauguration ceremony. It was a momentous occasion for our family and our community, highlighting the importance of representation and civic engagement. Witnessing her achievement at a young age left a lasting impression on me, inspiring my belief in the power of public service and the impact individuals can have on shaping their communities. What was your very first job? How long did you have it? My very first job was working two jobs simultaneously: one at Chief Auto Parts (now Auto Zone) and another at Walgreens. I continued working at Walgreens until my freshman year of college, gaining valuable experience in customer service and retail operations during that time. What is your favorite book? Why? My favorite book is \"The Autobiography of Willie Nelson\" because it resonates with me on a personal level as a musician. Willie Nelson's journey, from his musical career to overcoming personal challenges like incarceration, is both inspiring and relatable. His resilience, artistic vision, and enduring popularity despite setbacks reflect a deep passion for music and a commitment to staying true to oneself. The autobiography not only provides insight into Nelson's life but also celebrates his lasting impact on music and culture, making it a compelling read for anyone passionate about music and the human spirit. If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be? She-Ra: Princess of Power What was the last song that got stuck in your head? \"Not Like Us\" by Kendrick Lamar What is something that has been a struggle in your life? One of the ongoing struggles in my life has been navigating the pressure to conform and fit in with societal expectations or norms that may compromise my values or authenticity. I find it challenging to accept situations or individuals who lack integrity or authenticity, as I believe strongly in honesty and genuine connections. This struggle has taught me the importance of staying true to myself, even in the face of external pressures, and maintaining relationships built on mutual respect and sincerity. What do you perceive to be the United States' greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade? Over the next decade, the United States faces several significant challenges that demand urgent attention. Healthcare remains a pressing issue, with access, affordability, and quality of care needing comprehensive reform. Climate change poses an existential threat, requiring bold actions to mitigate its impacts and transition to sustainable practices. Addressing poverty and economic inequality is crucial for ensuring equitable opportunities and social mobility. In foreign affairs, navigating conflicts, promoting diplomacy, and managing immigration are critical for national security and global stability. These challenges require strategic planning, bipartisan cooperation, and innovative solutions to safeguard the nation's future prosperity and well-being. What are your thoughts on term limits? Term limits are a crucial mechanism to foster accountability, prevent entrenched power dynamics, and mitigate the risks of corruption and authoritarianism in government. Beyond these benefits, term limits can also promote greater diversity in political leadership, encouraging individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences to enter public service without facing entrenched incumbency advantages. This diversity strengthens democracy by ensuring that elected officials more accurately reflect the demographics and values of the communities they serve. While implementing term limits requires careful consideration of their specific impacts and adjustments to governance structures, they ultimately serve as a safeguard against the concentration of power and the perpetuation of self-serving interests in government. What qualities does the U.S. Senate possess that makes it unique as an institution? The U.S. Senate possesses several unique qualities that set it apart as an institution: I was born and bred for this job I served as a Commuter Senator at the University of TN. Senators must: 1. Equal Representation per State: Each state, regardless of size or population, is represented equally by two senators, which ensures that smaller states have an equal voice alongside larger ones in the legislative process. 2. Staggered Terms: Senators serve staggered six-year terms, with one-third of the Senate facing election every two years. This structure provides continuity and stability while allowing for regular opportunities for electoral accountability. 3. Confirmation Powers: The Senate plays a critical role in the confirmation of federal judges, Cabinet officials, and other key appointments made by the President, adding a layer of checks and balances to the executive branch. 4. Debate and Filibuster: The Senate traditionally allows for extended debate and filibustering, which can prolong decision-making but also allows for thorough examination of legislation and encourages bipartisan cooperation. 5. Advice and Consent: Alongside confirmation powers, the Senate has the authority to provide \"advice and consent\" on treaties negotiated by the President, enhancing its role in shaping U.S. foreign policy. 6. Committee System: The Senate's committee system allows for specialized expertise and focused deliberation on specific policy areas, influencing the legislative process and providing opportunities for thorough examination of issues. These qualities collectively contribute to the Senate's unique role in American governance, and I ready to serve all Tennesseans and maintain the checks on executive power. Do you believe that it’s beneficial for senators to have previous experience in government or politics? Yes, having previous experience in government or politics can be beneficial for senators, but it's not the sole determinant of effective leadership. Experience can provide valuable insights into legislative processes, institutional norms, and political strategy, which are essential for navigating the complexities of governance and enacting meaningful legislation. Experienced senators often bring a deep understanding of policy nuances and established relationships that can facilitate bipartisan cooperation and effective decision-making. However, while experience offers advantages, it should not overshadow the importance of diverse perspectives and fresh ideas. Senators who bring varied backgrounds, including those from outside traditional political circles, can offer innovative solutions, represent underrepresented communities, and bring a closer connection to grassroots concerns. Therefore, a balance between experienced leadership and diverse representation is crucial to ensuring the Senate effectively serves the interests of all constituents while fostering innovation and inclusivity in policymaking. What do you think of the filibuster? I am committed to using all available tools, including the filibuster if necessary, to protect and advance the interests of the people I represent. When critical issues or legislation threaten the well-being and rights of my constituents, I will not hesitate to take a stand and extend debate to ensure their voices are heard and their concerns addressed. The filibuster, while a challenging and sometimes contentious tactic, can be a vital means to safeguarding the values and priorities of those I serve. My dedication remains steadfast in using this tool responsibly and judiciously to achieve outcomes that uphold fairness, justice, and the common good for all. Is there a particular senator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after? I don't think I could honestly answer this question because I believe each person brings their own unique qualities and experiences to their role as a senator. However, if I were to draw inspiration from past leaders, I would look to a blend of Senator Fred Thompson and Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm. Senator Fred Thompson was known for his integrity, dedication to public service, and his ability to bridge partisan divides to achieve meaningful legislation. He brought a sense of pragmatism and a commitment to ethical leadership that I deeply admire. On the other hand, Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm was a trailblazer who broke barriers as the first African American woman elected to Congress and the first woman to run for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination. Her fearless advocacy for social justice, equality, and inclusivity resonates with my own values of fairness and representation for all. By embracing the best qualities of these two leaders—integrity, bipartisan collaboration, and a commitment to justice—I aspire to effectively serve my constituents and make a positive impact in the Senate. Tell us your favorite joke. I don't joke life is too serious but my favorite comedian is Richard Pryor How would you evaluate a judicial nominee? When evaluating a judicial nominee, I would conduct a thorough assessment focused on their judicial record and interactions with parties involved in their past rulings. Reviewing their written opinions and decisions provides insights into their legal reasoning, adherence to precedent, and ability to interpret the law impartially. Equally important is engaging with both plaintiffs and defendants affected by their rulings to gather firsthand perspectives on the nominee's fairness, clarity, and judicial temperament. My primary concern would be ensuring the nominee possesses the legal expertise, integrity, and commitment to applying the law objectively, free from personal bias or undue influence. This rigorous evaluation process aims to uphold the judiciary's role in safeguarding justice and ensuring that appointed judges can uphold the Constitution and protect the rights of all citizens impartially. What kind of relationships would you build with other senators? As an independent senator, I would prioritize building constructive and collaborative relationships with senators across the political spectrum. Recognizing that effective governance often requires bipartisan cooperation, I would seek common ground with colleagues from all parties to propose legislation that benefits my constituents and all Americans. By fostering open communication, mutual respect, and a commitment to finding pragmatic solutions, I believe we can transcend partisan divides and address pressing issues facing our nation. This approach not only promotes inclusivity and diversity of perspectives but also strengthens the legislative process by ensuring that diverse viewpoints are considered in shaping policies that serve the public interest. Ultimately, my goal would be to cultivate an environment of trust and cooperation in the Senate, where the focus remains on advancing the common good and delivering meaningful results for the people we represent. Do you believe that compromise is necessary or desirable for policymaking? Absolutely, compromise is essential in policymaking to navigate diverse viewpoints and achieve meaningful legislative outcomes. However, it must be approached with careful consideration to avoid compromising core principles, integrity, or the protected rights of constituents. The key is finding common ground that upholds ethical standards and serves the public interest without causing harm. By fostering constructive dialogue, respecting differing perspectives, and seeking solutions that benefit all stakeholders, compromise can facilitate progress and effective governance while maintaining trust and accountability in the legislative process. How should the U.S. Senate use its investigative powers? The U.S. Senate's investigative powers are crucial tools for upholding accountability, justice, and democracy. These powers should be exercised judiciously and with a commitment to transparency, aiming to uncover facts, scrutinize governmental actions, and ensure the integrity of public officials and institutions. Investigations should focus on protecting Americans' rights and interests, uncovering potential abuses of power, and holding individuals accountable for misconduct. By conducting thorough and impartial inquiries, the Senate can fulfill its duty to provide oversight, promote trust in government, and safeguard democratic principles. It's essential that these investigations are conducted with respect for due process, fairness, and the rule of law, ensuring they serve the broader public good and strengthen democratic governance. What organizations or individuals have endorsed your campaign? Robert F. Kennedy, Congressman Steve Cohen, Senator Brent Taylor, Housing For All. What criteria would you apply when deciding whether to confirm presidential appointees to their Cabinet? Foremost among these is the nominee's moral character. Integrity, honesty, and ethical conduct are foundational qualities essential for anyone assuming significant public responsibility. A comprehensive review of the nominee's past actions and behaviors, both professionally and personally, provides critical insights into their dedication to these principles and their ability to maintain them under scrutiny. Equally important is assessing the nominee's interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups of people. Effective leadership within a Cabinet position requires not only technical expertise but also the capacity to collaborate across political divides, listen to differing viewpoints, and foster inclusive decision-making processes. An evaluation of how the nominee has engaged with colleagues, stakeholders, and the public in prior roles can reveal their proficiency in building consensus and facilitating productive dialogue. Furthermore, examining the nominee's achievements and qualifications relevant to the responsibilities of the Cabinet position is crucial. Experience in pertinent fields—whether in government, academia, business, or nonprofit sectors—provides the expertise needed to navigate complex policy challenges and effectively manage departmental operations. A thorough review of the nominee's track record should highlight tangible accomplishments and a commitment to advancing public interests through innovative solutions and strategic leadership. Additionally, the alignment of the nominee's priorities with those of the president and the broader administration is a significant factor. While Cabinet members are expected to provide independent expertise and advice, their ability to support and implement the administration's policy agenda is essential for coherent policymaking and effective governance. Ethical, and capable of serving the American people with integrity and effectiveness in their respective Cabinet roles. What are your views on financial transparency and government accountability? I believe that financial transparency and government accountability are foundational pillars of a healthy democracy. It is crucial for elected officials and government institutions to operate with openness and clarity when handling public funds and making decisions that affect the community. Transparency fosters trust among constituents, ensuring they understand how their tax dollars are being used and allowing them to hold their representatives accountable. Accountability means taking responsibility for actions and decisions, being responsive to the needs and concerns of the people, and striving for ethical conduct in all aspects of governance. Upholding these principles not only strengthens democracy but also promotes fairness and integrity in public service.\nNote: Ballotpedia reserves the right to edit Candidate Connection survey responses.
