My mother and I lived in a hotel during my first semester that year; yet my mother encouraged me to maintain my faith in God, keep my grades up and stay away from drugs and trouble, and I would have an opportunity. I followed her advice and was accepted to the Naval Academy Preparatory School after graduating. A year later, I received a Congressional Appointment to the United States Naval Academy. This opportunity likely saved my life. It is that hope and faith that fueled my mother to encourage me through that time that still remains at the highest levels of this country's existing potential.
