Terris Todd is a former White House Appointee and Executive Director at the U.S. Department of Education, leading the initiative on educational excellence for African American students. His life of service spans over 25 years having worked on the local, state, and national levels of government as a Civil Service Commissioner, 5-Term County Commissioner, and State Legislative Office Director. Terris's dedication to conservative causes led to positions such as the Advisor of Coalitions Engagement at the Heritage Foundation where he worked closely with faith-based leaders and educators from across the country, addressing many of the challenges facing our families today. Terris obtained his B.S. in Elementary Education and M.A. in Educational Leadership, both from Western Michigan University. He worked as a public school teacher, administrator, and college instructor along with serving on various local, state, and national boards. Terris continues to provide leadership in the Commonwealth of Virginia serving the Norfolk State University Foundation Board, Frederick Douglass Foundation, Douglass Leadership Institute, Project 21, Christian Families Against Destructive Decisions, and Fatherhood Advisory Initiative. Protecting Parental Rights as the God-given, primary authority of their children, not the government or any other entities, is a firm and honorable stance I will take as their next congressman. The priority of any government is to protect its citizens from all foreign or domestic threats of harm. \r\nSecuring our border and reducing crime is a non-negotiable. It is beyond comprehension that anyone who has served our nation's military, would struggle to receive the resources needed to live a peaceable life.\r\n\r\nSupporting our veterans and military families should always be the priority of their elected representatives in local, state, and federal government. What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Education and Workforce; Energy and Commerce; Veterans Affairs' Transportation and Infrastructure; Healthcare What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official? Yes, but not mandatory What do you perceive to be the United States' greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade? Harmful ideologies seeking to divide us from within, which will cause threats to our national security, loss of respect from our allies and adversaries, loss of energy independence, shrinking economy with devaluation of our currency, etc. Do you believe that two years is the right term length for representatives? Yes What are your thoughts on term limits? Term limits are supported by the majority of Americans (over 80 percent), me included. If term limits are not implemented, our nation may struggle with moving forward and a ruling class of elected officials will continue to believe they have a right to remain for a lifetime with no accountability to the American people. A big and unlimited government will always breed many levels of corruption. Is there a particular representative, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after? Although not an elected representative, Frederick Douglass's influence on past administrations was remarkable. Both sitting representatives and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful? Families are struggling to afford the basics of healthcare costs and the threats of losing everything they have worked hard for in small businesses. Do you believe that compromise is necessary or desirable for policymaking? Yes The Constitution says that all bills for raising revenue must originate in the House. What role would this power play in your priorities if elected? Reducing the size and scope of the federal government remains a priority for the American taxpayers because it saves on costs and releases them from the unlimited spending practices of Congress. We have never seen a nation taxing itself into prosperity and paying others not to work. How should the U.S. House use its investigative powers? Investigative powers should always be used within the perimeters allowed by the US Constitution.
