The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Cardell's responses.\nExpand all | Collapse all\nWho are you? Tell us about yourself. I am Simon Cardell. I was born and raised in this district. I am running for the U.S. House of Representatives TX-4 to restore a virtuous government for the people and by the people. Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office? Economic Conditions - The problems with our economy today are caused by a corrupted and irresponsible government. Global corporations and financial institutions are preying on us. Our country is producing less, but making more money. These global entities taking in almost all of the wealth by financial manipulations and exploiting under developed countries resources. Also, the profit made from this is not getting taxed. I will tax this revenue appropriately and invest in our resources and labor so we can all reach American excellence. Cleaning out Corruption and getting Big Money out of Politics - We need to restore a government for the people and by the people. We are completely disconnected from our representatives. Today’s politicians work for themselves and their big money donors. We need campaign finance reform, congressional stock trading laws and term limits. Our government needs to have the will of the people and make decisions for what is good for the public and not corporations. Unity- Today our political environment is toxic. We have never been so polarized. This is because of politicians who choose to use anger and fear to divide us. I believe the human connection is too strong and that the majority of people can come together on moral grounds. I will not be negative or try to use fear in my campaign. I will appeal to our good and positive side. What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? I am passionate about a prosperous economy where we produce things here, so the whole country can reap the benefits. I am passionate about a true and honest government that acts out of good faith. I am also passionate about civil liberties and justice, well being, security and prosperity. Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why? My older brother. He has never let me down. Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy? The darkest hour What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official? Virtue. What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office? To properly conduct and dedicate yourself to do what is right for the people you represent. What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time? President George Bush defeating John Kerry in the 2004 Presidential Election. What was your very first job? How long did you have it? I was a bag boy at Kroger for the summer. What qualities does the U.S. House of Representatives possess that makes it unique as an institution? My courage to do what is right and my understanding of our current conditions. Do you believe that it's beneficial for representatives to have previous experience in government or politics? It’s definitely beneficial to have experience, but I believe new ideas and perspectives in the people’s house is needed. What do you perceive to be the United States' greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade? Political Polarization. Do you believe that two years is the right term length for representatives? Yes. What are your thoughts on term limits? I am for term limits. We need new people and ideas. Is there a particular representative, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after? Marie Glusenkamp Perez. Both sitting representatives and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful? My Dad’s story. He was doing very well for himself with my mom and 3 brothers. My mom died when I was 4 and it flipped our life around, so I got to see two very different prospectives. We bounced around from house to house in North Texas and social security really helped us as a safety net. Do you believe that compromise is necessary or desirable for policymaking? Yes. We are in a two party system and the party’s have different power levels in our government, so if you want to get anything done you have to work together. We need consensus. The Constitution says that all bills for raising revenue must originate in the House. What role would this power play in your priorities if elected? Give me power to tax large concentrations of wealth approximately and enforce financial responsibility. How should the U.S. House use its investigative powers? Thoughtfully. For truth and not political motives.\nNote: Ballotpedia reserves the right to edit Candidate Connection survey responses.
