I asked the cashier how her night was going, just making small-talk about the area and her night job. She started talking about a man that walked into the store last night and took off with a case of beer without paying for it. She had asked him for his ID when he came up to check out. He didn’t have one and started to argue with her about his age when she said she couldn’t sell him the beer without the ID. She was too afraid to confront him, knowing that he may be watching her, to see whether she would pick up her phone to dial 911. She said last night wasn’t the first time…and they usually drive off in nice cars. I told her that I was running for an elected office and let her know that I would absolutely help advocate for young mothers like her, working a full-time job to take care of her family. Federal monies are still being used to fund abortions. He didn’t have one and started to argue with her about his age when she said she couldn’t sell him the beer without the ID.
