I joined the board of the Boy’s and Girl’s Club and got into the family business – ministry. I’ve been an associate minister for almost a decade, preaching at churches across Georgia. This motel was so full of needy families that the school even put a bus stop in front of the motel to take the kids to school. So many families hit hard times and kept sliding downwards, with no support system. I jumped to help, but it wasn’t nearly enough. I knew I needed more help, and started reaching out to government officials. I met with government agencies and representatives from the city council on up, all the way to our current Congressman. Exhausted and at my breaking point, I begged his office for a lifeline. I told them how this family was suffering, they couldn’t afford to wait any longer and asked what options I had to help them. What I heard back shocked me. They told me this wasn’t Congressman Scott’s problem, because he was “too busy fighting Joe Biden…” And that was it. I went back to that family, and had to tell them their Congressman didn’t give a damn about them. I’ve never felt more powerless, or more angry. She told me she hadn't voted since 2008 for President Obama, when I asked her why hadn't voted in so long my expectations were that she disagreed with the policies, or didn't like the direction the country was going in, instead she explained in 2008 people came and talked to her. They didn't anymore after that. she went on to say \" Democrats don't even pretend to care about us, people say they come around when they want votes but y'all don't come around at all. You're the first democrat I seen actually stand up and try to run\" . <br/><br/>\r\n</pre>\nThat broke my heart because it's not our policies that rural America disagrees with, it's the fact that \"democrats don't even pretend to care\". We have got to break that stigma. These past few years have been some of the most tumultuous years since the 1960's civil rights era. Coming from a family of law enforcement officers Rev. Butler has been heartbroken over the divisions of our communities and officers. Rev. Butler has said on numerous occasions that the thought of defunding police officers budgets would do nothing but harm the overall community. We must rebuild the between the the two groups. To properly reach this goal we must increase funding to local and state law enforcement offices, create a national database that tracks misconduct and de-privatize our prisons. Our prisons are being filled disproportionately by people of color, due to the criminalization of poverty, a broken system of providing aid for those battling addiction, and a lack of support once someone is released to prevent their return. As your next Congressman Rev. Butler will push for the protections guaranteed to us by the promises of liberty for all and equal protection under the law by: Responsibly fund police departments while increasing accountability and responsibility. Reduce senseless gun violence, by closing background check loopholes & creating a national registry. Reform the bail system and end mass incarceration. End any/all use of privatized prisons. Integrating social workers and officers with backgrounds in psychology into law enforcement offices. Advocate for sensitivity, racial bias, and mental care training. Ensure returning citizens can reenter society with access to adequate resources and support. Encourage mandatory rehabilitation for battles of addiction. Ending qualified immunity for police and making police misconduct records public. Work to expunge records of those arrested but not convicted. De-criminalize Marijuana. In order for our rights to be protected we must uphold the First Amendment by: Encourage and defend all peaceful protest. Condemn and hold responsible any act of violence, looting, or domestic terror. Protect religious liberty and freedom; making sure everyone can practice their religion peacefully and with out judgement. Georgians are avid hunters and fire arms collectors, we must refrain from punishing lawful gun owners for the criminal acts done by some. We must insure the protections guaranteed under the Second Amendment by: ​ Upholding the second amendment and reassuring lawful & responsible gun owners. Create a national gun registry. Closing loopholes in background checks. End senseless gun violence, by preventing high risk individuals from acquiring weaponry. American citizens have been taken advantage of by insurance companies, financial institutions, and social media companies Consumer Protection must be a focus for the next congress by: ​ Protecting Americans from predatory practices by financial institutions and insurance companies. Forbid price gauging in times of crises or supply deficits. Prevent insurance companies from limiting or canceling claims to save themselves money. Dismantle monopolies on critical resources. Protect Americans from the sell of their personal information to companies via social media. Georgia's Seniors & Veterans deserve their voices to be heard. We must not continue to allow our most value and treasured commodity to slip through the cracks. We must extend protections by: ​ Improving the issues of care and extended wait times within the VA. Investing in mental health programs for discharged Veterans. Creating & Extending veteran programs into rural communities. Invest & Support veteran lead businesses and organizations. Provide help for homeless veterans. Raising social security for Georgia seniors. Lowering the insurance cost deduction for seniors on social security. TECHNOLOGY IN AMERICA Protecting our elections should be a primary focus of every government official. Our system of government can only work when every citizen is engaged in the process.
